Some questions: PR pitched this presentation as "four women and a computer." In that case, would the computer stand for the academy? Or is it our and/or VG's users' tool for intervening in the academy from outside? Or does the computer allow us to intervene in the extra-academic world from inside? Where are the gaps located, and to what extent are we in them? LC

To start, the OED's definitions of "negotiate," v.:

1. intr. a. To communicate or confer (with another or others) for the purpose of arranging some matter by mutual agreement; to discuss a matter with a view to some compromise or settlement.

b. To do business or trade; to engage in commerce.

2. a. trans. To conduct a negotiation or negotiations about (a matter, affair, etc.).

b. intr. Of a proposed agreement, treaty, etc.: to be in negotiation. Only in continuous tenses.

c. trans. To arrange for, achieve, obtain, or bring about (something) by negotiation.

d. trans. To set right by negotiation.

3. trans. a. Law. To transfer or assign (a cheque, bill, or other document) to the legal ownership of another; to convert into cash or notes; to obtain or give value for (a bill, cheque, etc.) in money.

b. To deal with, carry out, or arrange as a business or monetary transaction.

4. trans. a. To find a way through, round, or over (an obstacle, a difficult path, etc.).

b. To succeed in dealing with in the way desired; to manage or bring about successfully.

And of "negotiation," n.:


1. a. An act of dealing with another person; a private or business transaction. Also in extended use.

b. Trading, commerce.

c. Occupation, exercise.

2. A discussion or process of treaty with another (or others) aimed at reaching an agreement about a particular issue, problem, etc., esp. in affairs of state; an instance of negotiating. Freq. in pl.

3. The action, activity, or process of negotiating with another or others. a. With possessive adjective.

4. The action of crossing or getting over, round or through some obstacle by skilful manoeuvring; manipulation.
