MZ and LC: We are trying to understand who we are, what we are doing at VG (other than checking email and editing and posting pages), and what kind of entrance to the academy VG provides, and to define our terms in relation to "negotiation." Here's a list to start:
1. Gatekeepers or Border Patrol (masculine, military metaphors)
2. Receptionists, mediating between the outside world and a higher authority (allowing entrance of anyone with enough currency, according to rates established by the authority) (feminine, economic metaphor)
3. Impersonal Filters (cyborg metaphor)
4. Inscribers, enabling works to enter the literary canon, or what Bruno Latour might call the "cascades of inscription" of print literature, by applying to them a particular methodology and terminology of study
