Gerri Bates is Coordinator of Africana literature and is an Associate Professor of English at Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland. She is author of Alice Walker: A Critical Companion (2005) and The Color Purple: A Guide to the Characters (2007). She has authored numerous articles on African American women and is also a founding member of the Middle Atlantic Writers Association. Professor Bates earned her PhD at Indiana University of PA.
