History

The award-winning Voices from the Gaps website was founded in 1996 by Professors Toni McNaron (English) and Carol Miller (American Studies and American Indian Studies) to explore alternative educational tools and resources in the emerging realm of digital media and to provide a global readership with access to resources that document and celebrate the intellectual work and creativity of women artists of color.

In 2004, the website was expanded to include translations and multimedia materials. In addition, the range of women artists and writers was broadened beyond the geographical boundaries of North America and the social categories of race and minority status.

In 2007, VG undertook a redesign to update the design and navigation and improve the security and longevity of the site.
